Advertising
Campaign
Two
graduate student interns from the Department of Communication
at NIU developed a series of advertisements on women's achievements
in mathematics, and their ads were published once a week, usually
on Mondays, the highest circulation day for the campus paper.
Poster sized versions of the ads were also hung in places most
frequently used by mathematics students. The portal to the College
of Liberal Arts and Sciences web page ran different ads daily
for several months in 2002. Information for the initial ads came
from university enrollment and grade data; later ads included
information collected during the grant period. For instance, the
first ad stated that of the students who completed Calculus I
between 1995 and 1999, 15.5% of the males earned an A, while 20.1%
of the females earned an A. All of the ads contained the tag,
"Women Succeed in Math."
