TEACH House Leader Application

The goals of the Academic Learning Communities are to provide an engaging environment for residential students where they can (1) build strong relationships with students with common interests; (2) connect with outstanding NIU faculty and staff; and (3) engage in high quality programs.

The TEACH House is a Living-Learning Community for future teachers who are interested in furthering their contacts and experiences in education. TEACH House is located in Stevenson South.

House Leaders serve as undergraduate program coordinators working directly with the House Coordinator. The House Leaders will play an integral role in nurturing a residential learning community among residents and to connect students to the college of Education as well as student services. House Leaders will have an opportunity to build their own interpersonal communication and leadership skills through their role as program planners and as mentors/role-models for residents. This is a live-in position that requires approximately 15 hours/each week. Room is also provided, but House Leaders will still be responsible for their meal plan.

Primary Responsibilities/Expectations

  • Coordinate TEACH House activities.
  • Plan programs in collaboration with other Ambassadors or with the Community Advisors (CA) in the House. All programs and activities must be approved by the faculty coordinator.
  • Participate in programs associated with the College or student service unit associated with the house.
  • Represent the House at all University Open House programs.
  • Plan service and community outreach actives.
  • Attend residence hall meetings and meet regularly with House Coordinator.
  • Other activities or responsibilities as assigned
  • Abide by the policies and procedures of Housing and Residential Services and serve as a general role model for TEACH House residents.
  • Assist with marketing efforts.
  • Lead or participate in regular meetings with other House Leaders and/or advisors
  • Be an active participant in floor activities and work in cooperation and collaboration with the CA on the floor to build community among residents.
  • Serve as a role model for TEACH House residents by conducting oneself professionally in all interactions with residents, faculty and staff (on-line communication included)

TEACH House Specific Responsibilities/Expectations

  • Plan & Execute both educational and social programs each semester
  • Regularly attend TEACH House programs
  • Provide monthly updates on floor activities
  • Serve as a resource to residents on the floor and in the hall
  • Attend meetings with the TEACH House Advisor/Coordinator monthly

General Qualifications

  • Full-Time NIU Student
  • Organizational and time management skills.
  • Prior leadership experience is preferred.
  • Resume required.
  • Must be in judicial good standing with Housing and the University.

TEACH House Specific Qualifications

Be enrolled in a teacher licensure program

Housing and Remuneration Details

TEACH House Leaders receive a single room in Stevenson Towers South for the 2018 – 2019 academic year, (value: approximately $6,000 per semester). House Leaders will be responsible for their own meal plan with Housing and Residential Services.


House Leaders will report to the Faculty Coordinator for TEACH House. They will meet frequently with the faculty coordinator. Students not meeting position responsibilities as posted will have to resign their position for the spring 2019 semester and will be billed for the single room charges in Stevenson Towers South.

The deadline to apply is January 31. Interviews will occur between February 1 and March 16. House Leader selections will be made by March 16. House Leader training will occur on Friday, March 23 from 12 p.m. - 3 p.m.
