Certification
The physics department offers two initial certification programs that
are recognized by the state and which, upon successful completion,
entitle
a student to an Illinois Standard High School Certificate (6-12). The
two
programs, Physics or General Science, can be completed to prepare an
individual
to teach at either the high school or middle school level.
Candidate Profile
You can pursue certification in the program as either an undergraduate,
student-at-large or a graduate student. You do not need to be pursuing
a degree, in physics or anything else, at NIU to become certified by
NIU
to teach physics. Approximately 50% of the students in the
program
already have a bachelor's degree and are only seeking certification at
NIU. With the proper advising, students seeking an undergraduate
physics
teaching degree can complete both degree program and certification
requirements
in four years. Proper advising begins by contacting the physics
department
education adviser when you have been admitted to NIU and are ready for
admission to the certification program.
Job Placement
The physics department is proud of the fact that 100% of the students
completing certification programs through the
department have, if they wished it, found employment as teachers. In
fact, many have been sought after by school districts
before they have completed their student teaching experiences.
