Coalition for Excellence in Education

Over the past several years, CLAS-NIU has signed formal partnership agreements with a number of school districts in order to better meet the educational needs of the region.  In the future, we hope to expand the number of districts involved in our partnership.

Current Partner School Districts:

DeKalb CUSD #428
Geneva CUSD #304
Hononegah CHSD #207
KanelandCUSD #302
Oregon CUSD #220
St. Charles CUSD #303
Sycamore CUSD #427

Mission:
The mission of the Coalition for Excellence in Education is to provide multiple opportunities for professional development and to increase collaboration and communication between secondary classroom teachers and university faculty; to develop best practice teaching skills in pre-service teachers and to enhance best practice teacher skills of in-service teachers; and to positively impact the quality of teaching and learning in member school districts.

Methods:

Intensive Student Teaching
The Intensive Student Teaching program offers candidates for secondary certification in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences an integrated, year-long program in which they will complete a 16-week internship (80 hour minimum) in a partner school district and will participate in a 16-week teaching assignment in the same school district.  We hope that the Intensive Student Teaching program will promote mutually beneficial relationships between CLAS-NIU and the partner schools and offer faculty in partner schools the opportunity to interact with university faculty and students as teachers of courses and supervisors of students for professional development credit.

Sharing Our Skills
The "Sharing Our Skills" program offers opportunities for faculty members in partner school districts and for faculty members in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at NIU to share their skills and knowledge to the benefit of the faculty and students in the secondary schools of our partner districts and in the teacher education programs in the College.  Typical Sharing Our Skills activities may include (but are not limited to) assisting in curricular development, providing specialized training and/or consultation, assisting in grant development, and guest speaking/teaching.
