Specialization:
-
Collaboration and messaging technology for the web.
Types of resources I can make available to the partner school:
Web Hosting:
-
We can host SharePoint Team Services (STS) on our web servers for schools
that lack the necessary server and software support.
STS is a new, cutting edge Microsoft technology for enabling Office
document management, lists, surveys, and other team services on the web.
It is an ideal, low cost solution for setting up student / teacher portfolios
on the web with just a few clicks of the mouse.
For an example of a SharePoint web site that we use in our chemistry
teacher certification program, visit http://teachers.cties.niu.edu/Teams.
-
We can also host schools on an Exchange Server 2000 to support Outlook
Web Access (OWA) and Outlook 2000 / XP.
OWA enables mail access, contact management, and group scheduling from
anywhere on the web. Outlook XP can be configured to connect with our servers
to enable a personal information management solution for a school or district.
Outlook XP seamlessly integrates with STS.
Training Workshops:
-
For technology administrators:
This would include training to setup and configure SharePoint and FrontPage
extensions on school servers. It would also provide hands-on instructions
on how to use FrontPage XP to setup and customize school SharePoint sites.
-
For teachers:
This would include training on how to use SharePoint Team Services
for portfolio or community-focused projects. Discussions, lists, document
libraries, and integration with Office 2000 / XP will be emphasized.
Description of skills I can bring to a public school partner
district:
SharePoint Solutions:
-
We can work with technology administrators to setup Windows 2000 services
within the school or district to enable SharePoint webs for custom applications,
such as portfolio creation and management, parent / teacher / student communities,
etc.
-
We can also work with technology administrators to use FrontPage XP to
develop custom rollouts of SharePoint web sites that include a school logo,
custom style sheets, lists, and libraries.
-
We can work with teachers to help them implement SharePoint solutions in
the classroom.

Specialization:
-
My area of expertise is in developmental psycholgy.
My focus in on children's social relationships. Specifically, I am
interested in parent-child and peer relationships, particularly during
adolescence and with an interest on these issues across non-White and White
racial groups.
-
I also worked for three years as an Assistant Professor
and Cooperative Extension Specialist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
The Cooperative Extension Service is the branch of land grant universities
that is responsible for helping translate the research conducted at the
university into practice. My responsibilities in that position were
to conduct research and to participate in outreach to the community around
issues of youth development. I have an ongoing interest in creating
avenues for disseminating and utilizing research-based information in the
community setting.
Types of Resources I can make available to the
partner school:
-
I created a newsletter, Gateway: Parenting
Into the Teen Years (with a team of Extension Educators) for the cooperative
Extension Service of the University of Illinois. This is a 12-issue
newsletter intended to provide parents of young adolescents information
about the transition to adolescence. This is just an example of the
types of materials that I could assist schools in creating for their students
and parents.
-
I also maintain contacts with colleagues in the Cooperative
Extension Service in the States of Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, and
Wisconsin. Through these contacts I have access to resources (e.g.,
printed materials, programs for adolescents, calls for grant proposals,
etc.) that might be useful to schools in their work with adolescents.
Description of skills I can bring to a public
school district:
-
Provide administrators, teachers, counselors, and
parents with research-based information on adolescent development generally
and more specifically (for non-White and White groups) on :
Parent-child relationships
Parenting style
Parenting and academic achievement
Parenting and drug use and delinquent behavior
Parental management of peer relationships
Friendship
Bullying/victimization
Peer rejection
Peer influence
Peer pressure
Same- and cross-ethnic friendships
-
Assist school personnel in planning programs around
the issues listed in 1. above
-
Assist school personnel in preparing grant proposals
around the issues listed in 1. above
-
Assist school personnel in evaluating programs around
the issues listed in 1. above

Types of Resources I can make available to partner

My areas of research focus on the way that members
in small groups, heterogeneous groups in particular, interact. Due
to current systems of inequality, different individuals have different
statuses in groups. Studies show that individuals who possess low
status characteristics (i.e., a person of color, a woman, a person with
disability) are often at a disadvantage when interacting with those of
higher status (i.e., a white person, a man, an able-bodied person).
My past research indicates that by defining collaberative tasks in a non-unitary
or multiability manner, individuals who possess low status characteristics
can derive important benefits by decreasing group inequality and creating
an environment where all group members have opportunities to participate.
America's educational system is in a state of transition as educators and
administrators are challenged to create curriculum and environments for
an increasingly diverse population. Teachers and others should be
award of the effects that status characteristics may have on collaberative
groups, and work to ensure equity in participation.
Description of skills I can bring to a public
school partner district:
-
I can provide information on 1) diffuse status characteristics
and the ways that they are activated in groups and, 2) multiability intervention
ideas that create a more equitable setting where groups of diverse children
must work and learn together. I can also help in the writing of grants
for funding to help implement new ideas for working with a changing population.
