Visiting Northern's University Resources for Women helped her to
clarify her present educational goals. She is currently a doctoral
student in the Department of Adult and Continuing Education; her
interests are in the areas of feminist pedagogy, learning in social
context, the global civil society and spirituality in adult education.

her MA in Sociology from NIU in May of 2002. Shanon also studied
in Costa Rica and Spain. Her research is focused on Hispanic females.

FALL SOCIAL
GATHERING
Thank you to Deb Smith-Shank for hosting a lively
September gathering for faculty associates at her marvelously artistic
abode, and for donating most of the refreshments! Thanks, too, to
all the others who brought snacks. Between meeting colleagues, coaxing
conversation from the children who attended, and watching for the
missing kitten to appear, all who were able to come had a great
time. (top)
DONATE TO
THE WOMEN'S STUDIES PROGRAM
Every year, funds from the Women's Studies Program's
NIU Foundation account help to send students, program faculty, and
faculty associates to conferences. Foundation funds also pay for
speakers and special events. We are particularly reliant on our
Foundation account this year due to our limited regular budget.
Therefore, please consider giving generously. It is a great way
to help other women! Donations should be sent to the NIU Foundation,
indicating that they are for the Women's Studies Program. (top)

Series will be held Thursday, September 26, in Reavis 103, 3:30

NIU 2002 CONFERENCE
FOR YOUNG WOMEN
This 6th annual conference, sponsored
by College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Women's Studies
Program, will give high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors
the chance to consider a broad range of possible careers by having
them meet with NIU faculty and students. The meeting will be held
Monday, October 28, from 8:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., and will feature
tours of the NIU campus and campus facilities in addition to presentations
by faculty on topics relevant to women's collegiate experiences
and career choices. (top)
SEEKING EVENTS
FOR WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH
Our theme for Women's History Month and the year
is “Women's Volunteerism”. We are looking for topics
and speakers for this yearly event; please contact the Women's Studies
Department at 753-1038 if you have ideas. Our programs and events
will look at the theme from a variety of perspectives, examining
such questions as: How are unwaged labor and volunteerism defined?
What have women volunteers contributed to our society? Has volunteerism
benefited or hurt women? What is the future of women's volunteerism?
What is the role of women's unwaged work in our economy? How does
women's unwaged labor vary around the world? Our financial resources
for Women's History Month this coming year are even more restricted
than usual, so we may be looking for programs that involve some
volunteerism on the part of the speakers as well! Also, we encourage
faculty to discuss volunteerism in spring courses and to develop
relevant assignment options. When the courses end, we'd love to
hear how these activities succeeded.
