“Past Debates, Present Possibilities, Future Feminisms:

A Women’s and Gender Studies Conference—Celebrating 30 Years of NWSA,”
will be held in June at Pheasant Run in St. Charles

The following NIU faculty and students will present at the conference:

Richard Blecksmith, Professor of Mathematical Sciences, will be a presenter on “Differential Equations: Reducing Barriers to Women's Participation in Math and Science Through A Female-Centered Calculus I Class” during the “Women in Mathematics and Science: What One Campus Can Do” session (Fri, Jun 29 - 3:00pm - 4:15p.m., Building/Room: Gallery Hall / Utrillo).

Ashleigh Burge, Philosophy, M.A. & Women’s Studies Graduate Certificate student, will present “Responsibility and Relationship: Re-thinking the Abortion Debate” during the “Regulating Reproduction” session (Sun, Jul 1 - 8:00am - 9:15am, Building/Room: Legends / Jack Nicklaus).

Billy Clem, English, Ph.D. student, will present "'Makes you look fierce': The Womanist Strategies of Junot Diaz's Short Fiction” during the “Literature and Feminisms: Cisneros, Erdrich, Diaz” session (Sun, Jul 1 - 11:00am - 12:15pm, Building/Room: St Charles Ballroom / Salon IV).

James Giles, Professor of English, will moderate the “Third Wave Feminist Writing: A Transnational Perspective” session (Fri, Jun 29 - 1:30pm - 2:45pm, Building/Room: Broadway Ballroom / Broadway B).

Kelly E. Happe, Assistant Professor of Communication, will moderate the “Empowering Girls, Sorority Culture, and Young Adult Lesbian Literature” panel as part of the “Girls Studies and Activism” track (Fri, Jun 29 - 12:00 pm - 1: 15pm, Building/Room: Gallery Hall / Gaugin). Happe will also present "The Political Unconscious of Science: Theorizing Heredity in the Age of Genomics" during the "Feminist Research Science and Surveillance" session (Sun, Jul 1- 9:30 am-10:45 am, Building/Room: Broadway Ballroom / Broadway A).

Caresse John, English, Ph.D. & Women’s Studies Graduate Certificate student, will moderate “Empowering Girls, Sorority Culture, and Young Adult Lesbian Literature” as part of the “Girls Studies and Activism” session (Fri, Jun 29 - 12:00pm - 1:15pm, Building/Room: Gallery Hall / Gauguin).

Rebekah Kohli, Program Coordinator for the Women’s Studies Program, will be a presenter on “Partners in Outreach: Connecting with Girls to Grandmothers” during the “Community Partners and Non-Traditional Allies” session as part of the Program Administration and Development Pre-Conference (Thu, Jun 28 - 10:00am - 11:15am, Building/Room: Gallery Hall / Gauguin).

Maimouna Konate, Adult & Higher Education, Ed.D. & Women’s Studies Graduate Certificate student, will present on “Asian and African Women's Movements in the Belly of Imperialism, Patriarchy, and Religious Fundamentalism” as part of the “Im/Migration and Mobility” session (Fri, Jun 29 - 8:00am - 9:15am, Building/Room: Gallery Hall / Utrillo).

Amy K. Levin, Director of the Women’s Studies Program and Professor of English, will moderate the “Girls and Emo Culture” panel as part of the “Girls Studies and Activism” track (Fri, Jun 29 - 1:30pm - 2:45pm, Building/Room: Gem Rooms / Ruby); and she will be a presenter on “Women's Studies as Catalyst in Campus Programs for Women in Science and Math” during the “Women in Mathematics and Science: What One Campus Can Do” session (Fri, Jun 29 - 3:00pm - 4:15pm, Building/Room: Gallery Hall / Utrillo).

Bonnie Lynn Miller, English, M.A. and Women’s Studies Graduate Certificate student, will present “Deconstructing sexual stereotypes” during the “Creative Writing Series #3 (poetry)” session (Sat, Jun 30 - 9:30am - 10:45am, Building/Room: Legends / Jack Nicklaus).

Meena Razvi, Instructor in Counseling, Adult & Higher Education, will present on “Asian and African Women's Movements in the Belly of Imperialism, Patriarchy, and Religious Fundamentalism” as part of the “Im/Migration and Mobility” session (Fri, Jun 29 - 8:00am - 9:15am, Building/Room: Gallery Hall / Utrillo).

Robin Rockey, undergraduate Journalism student, will present “Portrayal of Women in Magazine Advertisements; A Comparison of Ads in Men's and Women's Magazines” during the “Body Studies: The Chicana Body, Feminist Philosophy, and Medieval Mystics” session (Sat, Jun 30 - 3:30pm - 4:45pm, Building/Room: Gallery Hall / Gauguin).
