"This is What a Feminist Looks Like" Sticker Day Fact Sheet

What is "This is What a Feminist Looks Like" Sticker Day?

To kick off Women's History Month, on March 1st we ask everyone on our campus to wear a sticker that says "This is What a Feminist Looks Like." The Women's Studies Program makes and provides these stickers. By sponsoring this activity, we hope to draw attention to the many ways in which diverse people promote women’s rights. We propose to educate the campus community on this day by breaking harmful stereotypes that cast all feminists as white, or female, or politically radical, and to open up the definitions of the word “feminist” to more complicated meanings.

How do we make the stickers?

We create and print our own stickers on round Avery labels (#5294). These labels cost us approximately $7 for a pack of 300. We have provided a template of our stickers in Word format and pdf format (larger file).

How do we publicize the event?

We publicize Sticker Day in a number of ways. First, our director sends a letter out to friends of our program and university administrators asking them to wear a sticker on March 1 (view an example of the letter in Word, pdf, or htm format.) We include the event on our Women's History Month poster/calendar that gets sent out to all of our students, faculty, staff and friends, and gets posted around campus (view an example of our 2006 Women's History Month posterin .pdf format). We also post flyers around campus advertising the event. Finally, we publish an ad in our school newspaper, which runs 1-2 weeks prior to the event.

How do we distribute the stickers?

We make the stickers available approximately 2 weeks prior to the event. We invite people to come to our office to pick up a sticker. We also carry them with us so when we're out around campus we can pass them out to anyone who wants one. We will also mail them to anyone on campus who wants a sticker (campus mail).
