Women's History Month 2008

Everyone is invited to join the Northern Illinois University Women's Studies Program and the numerous other sponsors for Women's History Month! Our theme for 2008 is "Enterprising Women." Our programs and activities will consider the many ways in which enterprising women gain accomplishments, break new ground, and make changes. All events are open to the public and (unless otherwise noted) are free. Sign language interpreters will be provided upon request; call (815) 753-6515 (one week's notice is preferred). Russ Castronovo, Jean Wall Bennett Professor of English and American Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison, gives a keynote presentation at 8:00 p.m., Friday, February 29. David Bevington, Phyllis Fay Horton Distinguished Service Professor in the Humanities, University of Chicago, gives a keynote presentation at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, March 1. "The Vagina Monologues." POSTPONED
Saturday from 4:00-6:00 p.m., and Sunday from 2:00-4:00 p.m.
Location: Gabel Hall, Cavan Auditorium.
Performances will raise awareness of domestic violence and funds for Safe Passage Domestic Violence Shelter. Sponsors: NIU Women's Rights Alliance.

Women's History Month Annual Art Exhibit. Gallery hours: Fridays, 7:00-9:00 p.m.
Location: DeKalb Area Women's Center, 1021 State Street, DeKalb.

Monday, March 3
"Enterprising Women."
All day.
Location: Founders Memorial Library, 1st floor and 4th floor (Rare Books & Special Collections).

Founders Memorial Library will display books, images and other materials related to the theme of enterprising women. The displays may be viewed throughout March during the library's normal operating hours.

"What is Feminism, Anyway?"
11:00-11:50 a.m.

Location: Holmes Student Center, Heritage Room.

Diana Swanson, Associate Professor of Women's Studies and English, offers a presentation that will challenge stereotypes and misunderstandings about the nature and definition of feminism. Sponsors: Women's Studies Program and LGBT Studies Program.

Self-Defense Workshop.
4:30-6:00 p.m.
Location: Anderson Hall, Room 102.

Lesley Rigg, Associate Professor of Geography, uses her black belt karate skills to teach women how to protect themselves. Sponsors: Women's Studies Program.

Tuesday, March 4
"This is What a Feminist Looks Like" Sticker Day!
All day.

Stop by Reavis 103 to pick up a sticker and wear it with pride. Stickers are available after February 14.

Women's History Month Essay and Poster Contest Winners Recognition. POSTPONED
4:00 p.m.

Location: Neptune Hall, Walnut Room.

Location: Barsema Hall, Barsema Auditorium 200.

Janet M. Viane, Senior Vice President for InnerWorkings and NIU alumna, will present "Today's Challenges for Women in Leadership." A reception will follow in the atrium. Sponsor: College of Business.

Wednesday, March 5
"Northern Illinois Women (1900-1949): Untold Stories."
Noon-1:00 p.m.
Location: Adams Hall, Chandelier Room.
Enjoy a presentation by Barbara Cole Peters on enterprising women at NIU. Dessert and beverages only will be provided. Sponsors: Women's Studies Program and NIU Alumni Association.

Margaret Asalele Mbilizi, Assistant Professor of Counseling, Adult and Higher Education and Co-Director of the Office of International Initiatives, discusses empowering rural women in developing countries. Sponsor: Women's Studies Faculty Associates Lecture Series.

"The F-Word: Defining Feminism."

"Charity and Sylvia: Researching Love Between Women in the Early American Republic."

"Necessary Feminists: The Feminist Presence in American Politics."
11:00 a.m.
Location: Holmes Student Center, Heritage Room.

Lecture by Benita Roth, Associate Professor of Sociology and Women's Studies at Binghamton University, on enterprising women in politics, and especially the role of feminism and feminists in U.S. politics. Sponsors: Women's Studies Program, Graduate Colloquium Committee, and Department of Sociology.

"Racial/Ethnic Feminisms."
5:30 p.m.
Location: Holmes Student Center, Heritage Room.

Benita Roth will introduce students to the use of intersectional analysis in the study of social movements. This seminar will be based on Roth's award-winning book, Separate Roads to Feminism: Black, Chicana and White Feminist Movements in America's Second Wave.

"From Hits and Beats to the Streets: Taking on Masculinity and Hip Hop."
7:00-8:30 p.m.
Location: Holmes Student Center, Carl Sandburg Auditorium.

Filmmaker Byron Hurt will join us for a showing of his film, Beyond Beats and Rhymes, followed by a discussion about hip hop music and masculinity. Seats are limited; call 815.753.0320 to reserve. "Girls Fight Back"

This is a 3-part presentation: Erin Weed from Girls Fight Back begins by "sharing the story of Shannon McNamara’s life and murder; she will then teach "attendees about the value of intuition, how to reduce the risk of being a target by being a “bad victim;” finally, participants are "taught self-defense techniques." Sponsors: College Panhellenic Council.

"Women Dancing: Strengthening the Spirit."
Noon.
Location: Anderson Hall, Room 135.

NIU faculty and students choreograph and perform a variety of dances. Sponsor: Department of Kinesiology & Physical Education.

"Enterprising Women throughout History."
Noon-1:30 p.m.
Location: Neptune Hall, Northeast and Southeast meeting rooms.

NIU history professors Rachel Hope Cleves, Sundiata Djata, Aaron Fogleman, Valerie Garver and Eric Jones will discuss their research on enterprising women. Sponsors: Department of History and Women's Studies Program.
